November at the Dallas Opera
The Final Performances of Bizet's 'Carmen' and Donizetti's 'The Elixir of Love' headline the event this November at the Dallas Opera.
November brings the final three performances of Bizet's colorful and sensual opera "Carmen": Saturday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m. Thrill to mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine in her American Debut in the title role. Margaine was hailed as "Best Newcomer" in the 2011 French Classical Music Awards. This production also introduces the new music director of the Dallas Opera, Maestro Emmanuel Villaume (who has previously served as a guest conductor for TDO), and features a phenomenal cast led by Portuguese tenor Bruno Ribeiro as the obsessed Don José, soprano Mary Dunleavy as his faithful Micäela and bass-baritone Dwayne Croft as the dashing toreador, Escamillo.

On Sunday, November 3rd the Dallas Opera will host a fun-filled afternoon of free arts-related activities starting at 12:30 p.m. in the C. Vincent Prothro Lobby of the Winspear, and concluding with the Dallas Opera Family Concert at 2:00 p.m. featuring soprano Joanna Mongiardo and mezzo-soprano Emily Fons. These rising stars along with the Dallas Opera Orchestra will perform under the baton of Maestro Anthony Barrese, former Assistant Conductor of the Dallas Opera.
Ms. Fons will sing Jacques Offenbach's aria "Dites-lui" from "La Grande Duchesse de Gérolstein." Ms. Mongiardo will be performing "Les oiseaux dans la charmille" followed by the "Barcarolle" from Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann." Ms. Mongiardo and Ms. Fons also will perform duets and additional selections from Mozart's "Così fan tutte" along with highlights from Léo Délibes opera "Lakmé," Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah," Dominick Argento's "The Aspern Papers" and Gounod's "Faust." The Dallas Opera Orchestra will have an extra opportunity to shine in works like the rousing, high-kicking Overture to "Orpheus in the Underworld" and a sultry Tango from "The Dream of Valentino."

On Saturday, November 9th a Dallas Opera Family Matinee performance of our newest family friendly production-a hilarious, fully-staged one-act opera about a young man who hopes to win the heart of his true love with the help of Doctor Dulcamara and his mysterious potion! Gaetano Donizetti's "The Elixir of Love" presented at 2:00 p.m. in the Margot & Bill Winspear Opera House (located at 2403 Flora Street, Dallas TX 75201). Sung by several of the most talented young artists in North Texas; the SMU cast of "The Elixir of Love" features soprano Audra Methvin as Adina, tenor Jeawook Lee as Nemorino, baritone Njabulo Mthimkhulu as Belcore, and bass Travis McGuire as Dulcamara.
The cast and the Dallas Opera Orchestra will perform under the baton of Maestro Anthony Barrese, former Assistant Conductor of the Dallas Opera.
The classic storybook set and costumes were designed by Production Designer Tommy Bourgeois. Joel Ferrell, Dallas Theater Center's Associate Artistic Director, has staged this beloved opera for the Dallas Opera. TDO's Music Director for Education and Family Programming, Mary Dibbern put together this newly abridged English-language version of this charming Donizetti romance.
