General Motors to Extend Benefits to All Same-Sex Married Couples

Officials from General Motors recently announced a new game-changing policy that will extend marriage benefits to spouses of same-sex workers - even if the couple lives in a state that does not recognize gay marriage. The couples, however, must have been married in a state where same-sex marriage is legal, the Huffington Post reports.

"This decision is in line with GM's efforts to find, keep and grow the world's best talent and to offer our employees policies and benefits that are competitive with many of the largest and best-managed industrial companies in the U.S.," General Motor's Chief Diversity Officer Ken Barrett said in a statement to the Huffington Post.

The new policy will impact pension plans, savings and health care plans for same-sex couples who have legally tied the knot in one of the 14 states where gay marriage is legal. California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington state all recognize gay marriage, as does the District of Columbia. Illinois is set to be the 15th state to legalize same-sex marriage.

"GM supports its lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) employees in many ways and was recently recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation as one of the 'Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality,'" GM's website reads. "We work to provide an environment that recognizes and embraces the diverse needs of our employees and the LGBT community. That includes an active LGBT employee group, strong relationships with external organizations and community groups, and inclusive health and domestic partner benefits."
