Spent Musket Oil Launched by BKLYN Dry Goods and D.S. & Durga
NEW YORK, NY - Brooklyn Navy Yard born & bred vintage pop-up brand, BKLYN Dry Goods launched their first scent, the aptly named Spent Musket Oil, with D.S. & Durga during New York's biggest fragrance event dubbed Elements Showcase.
Created over the course of two meetings at D.S. & Durga's Brooklyn workshop, Spent Gun Oil was developed after fellow perfumer, Ulrich Lang suggested an introduction to D.S. & Durga after meeting BKLYN Dry Goods during men's market last year, discovering the vintage popup brand had scented all of their product tags with a concoction they?d made using a mix of essential oils they'd come across while preparing for the market.
"We weren't originally planning on launching a fragrance," mentions Jahn Hall, BKLYN Dry Goods Co-Founder, "it was all rather serendipitous. We really just wanted to create something [by scenting for our tags] we'd hadn't ever seen before, creating a scent for our tags that was masculine & outdoorsy."
Hall, alongside fellow BKLYN Dry Goods founder, Kurt Uhlendorf met with Lang who expressed an interest in seeing the scent come to life & introduced the pair to David Moltz, who with Kavita Ahuja launched D.S. & Durga in 2008 creating small batch fragrances of premium-sourced ingredients.
With a limited release of just 175 50ml bottles, Spent Musket Oil takes it's cue from the other worldly aroma of a Barbary wars era rifle found in the hold of a packet ship in the Brooklyn Navy Yards with accords of vintage birchwood, spent rifle oil, & dried leather hilt warmed by Cavendish tabac, Merchant Marine's bay rhum, & musk. Using D.S. & Durga's bottle, BKLYN Dry Goods wrapped the French-made glass vessel in leather cord, affixing to it a pair of custom-inscribed stainless military dog-tags.
Says Uhlendorf of the collaboration, "We couldn't imagine working alongside anyone better suited for a project like this. To acknowledge someone's talent & skill is one thing, however to work alongside it & see it up close, is an entirely different experience."
Spent Musket Oil will be available in the coming weeks at select shops throughout the country, BKLYN Dry Goods' own website & through the brand's monthly pop-up shops.
Brought to you by Jahn Hall & Kurt Uhlendorf, BKLYN Dry Goods is born & bred by insatiable curiosity & a love of vintage. With a combined 30+ years in the fashion industry, Hall & Uhlendorf discovered that most vintage was beautifully executed but prohibitively priced or jammed into poorly merchandised dusty warehouses at a steal. Both options seemed to us a bit intimidating to most.
By forgoing the traditional brick & mortar formula & instead hosting monthly pop-up events & by developing an online marketplace, BKLYN Dry Goods strives to present a tightly merchandised, thoughtfully executed collection of menswear, objects & curiosities offered at reasonable prices.
By focusing on American-made product and the world's top heritage brands, BKLYN Dry Goods hopes to bring attention to the craftsmanship apparent in these products as well as the lasting quality & enduring relevance today amid society's short attention span & disposable mentality.
