Mayor Pete has not been coy about the fact that he is gay, and he has been equally forthright about his status as a happily married man. But just who is his husband, Chasten Buttigieg?

NowThis News took a closer look at the swiftly-rising Democratic candidate's husband with a video titled "Chasten Buttigieg could be America's First Gentleman."

Chasten described his feelings when, just after Buttigieg announced his candidacy, he joined Pete on stage and the two shared a kiss that made the hearts of LGBTQs everywhere soar. "Just walking out into the room and being received so warmly — there are no words for that," Chasten said. "It's overwhelming."

Viewers got to know more about Chasten, including how he became a teacher, having been inspired by a teacher of his own named Mrs. Bach, who made him feel that "her classroom was a safe space. I wanted to be the teacher in the room that made kids feel like their dreams mattered," Chasten said. "When I was 13, I didn't think that there was a world waiting for me." But, he added, "now I have an amazing husband, an amazing group of supportive friends."

The video included a clip from a speech in which Mayor Pete addressed the ways in which LGBTQ Americans and their families remain subject to discrimination despite the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that granted equal access to marriage for all Americans. "And take it from Chasten and me, you're not free if a county clerk gets to tell you who you ought to marry 'cause of their idea or their political beliefs."

Chasten also talked about his marriage to Mayor Pete. Chasten described how their first date "was actually supposed to be coffee," but because he got caught in traffic the two decided to have dinner instead. "And when I pulled up in front of his house to pick him up, he opened the door and we both said 'Howdy' at the same time," Chasten recalled. "And then we both said, 'What! That's my word!' "

Added Chasten, "It was kind of a cute meet cute."

Buttigieg offered his own version of how he and Chasten met in an interview with the podcast LGBTQ&A, reported People Magazine. The two first met via a dating app called Hinge, People reported. At the time, Chasten was living in Chicago and was completing his master's degree. Their courtship commenced across a distance, but that distance was closed by modern telecommunications — as well as an immediate spark.

"A lot of time is kind of hanging out on my phone, and I just I could just tell by the chatting that he was somebody special and that I wanted to meet him," Buttigieg recalled.

The video notes that the couple wed last year. The New York Times covered their wedding, and Chasten told the newspaper, "Literally, there were fireworks on our first date."
