Twitter is Speculating that Whoopi Goldberg is Going to be a Secret Oscars Host

Wednesday Feb 20, 2019

A tweet has sparked a wild theory that Whoopi Goldberg is the secret host of the 91st Academy Awards Sunday.

Of course, the Oscars is without a host — for the sixth time in the ceremony's history, and the first time since 1989's much-panned edition. (The ceremony also had no host in 1939, 1969, and 1970, and 1971 thirty-four individuals served as co-hosts.)

After the Kevin Hart debacle, in which the comedian was announced as host but quickly left the gig after a backlash ensued over homophobic tweets and jokes he made in the past, the Academy struggled to land a new host. But a tweet from Peter Knegt, who calls himself "Canada's 86th most important homosexual," has kickstarted a new theory that Goldberg is will show up to the awards show Sunday as host.

Picked up by the U.K. newspaper The Guardian, Knegt noted that Goldberg has been absent from her daytime talkshow "The View" since "the day after they announced her as an Oscar presenter," claiming that she's been sick. He goes on to point out that Goldberg is the only previous Oscar host to be a presenter at the 2019 ceremony and apparently said on "The View" in December that she'd be down first hosting the show.

Back in 1994, Goldberg became the first solo woman to host the Oscars. She hosted three more times in 1996, 1999 and 2002.

Goldberg, unsurprisingly, has not commented on the speculation.

In semi-related news Vanity Fair's film critic Richard Lawson recently recapped the 1999 Oscars. Click here to check that out.
