Aubrey Anderson-Emmons looked to her own family - "Modern Family," that is - in choosing how to publicly embrace authenticity.
People Magazine reported that the 18-year-old actor and singer-songwriter, who starred on the show as Lily from the age of 4 until she was 12, gleefully lip-synced along with a snippet of her own dialogue from the show in a video posted to Instagram.
"In the scene," a writeup from Parade noted, "her on-screen aunt Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, portrayed by Sofía Vergara, told a young Lily that she was Vietnamese, to which the little girl responded, 'No I'm not, I'm gay, I'm gay!'"
The Instagram clip includes the scene's next beat, in which Jesse Tyler Ferguson, playing one of Lily's dads, Mitchell, jumps in reflexively with, "Honey, no, you're not gay. You are just confused!"
The clip continues as Ferguson's next line comes on: "Oh my god, what is wrong with me?!"
The audio clip comes from an episode in which young Lily and her dads eat a meal at a Vietnamese restaurant together with Mitchell's sister-in-law, Gloria. What is intended as an attempt to help Lily connect with her ancestral heritage quickly goes awry.
Text superimposed on the video clarified just where in the LGBTQ+ community Anderson-Emmons locates.
"people keep joking so much abt me being gay when I literally am(I'm bi)" the caption reads.
Anderson-Emmons finished off the post with, "happy pride month to all and to all a goodnight hehehe #modernfamily #lily #pridemonth #bi #pride🌈".
"Since 'Modern Family' wrapped in 2020, Anderson-Emmons has been focused on her education but recently announced a new artist project where she will be releasing music under the name Frances Anderson," Parade noted.
Anderson-Emmons has teased her original songs on her Instagram, including an upcoming single titled "Don't Forget Me." The video clip promoting the song shows Anderson-Emmons slow-dancing with another young woman.
Fans went wild with enthusiasm and support in the comments for the coming out post.
"Omgggg cam and mitch would be so happy 😭🎀💅🏻," one person cheered, referencing Anderson-Emmons' onscreen dads.
"coming out to this audio is truly iconic," raved another.
"Like fathers like daughter," a third fan declared, while a fourth applauded, "Happy pride, girlie! 🙌"
"omg she's ACTUALLY gay i call it full circle," one excited commenter said, as another cried out, "This is next level epic".
Someone else put it simply: "CONGRATS. So happy for you!!! 💖💜💙"
Congrats indeed!
